Race morning packet pick up is as a LAST RESORT only, and for those on the contracted bus from the Strip. NO need to email me to ask. Just plan on arriving to the start line 45 minutes prior to your start time. Packets will be at the start line. Yes- you can have a friend pick up your packet. You MUST wear your loaner TIMING CHIP on YOUR SHOE in order to be timed! *Please: If you do NOT plan on racing, do NOT take your TIMING CHIP*
- Saturday December 14, 2013: Please arrive to the Boulder Beach Special Events Beach (start/ finish area) with ample time before your race’s scheduled start time. 10K= 8am; Marathon= 8:02am; ½ Marathon= 9am. All start at the covered BBQ area at Boulder Beach.*Please do NOT arrive prior to 7am*
- PARKING: Pull into the NORTH Boulder Beach Special Events Beach area. You will see a covered BBQ area on the SOUTH access road about ¼ mile off Lakeshore Drive - this is the start/ finish area. Park as directed by the volunteer in the dirt parking area. It is about a 3 minute walk to the event area. Please do not park in the water safety/ ranger station parking lot- this is not available for our use. Remember: there is a $10 per car entrance fee into Lake Mead NRA which is not included with your race entry. (except for those on the contracted Strip bus- it is included).
Please note that new registrations are no longer allowed on site on race day, per the park service permit. PLEASE be sure to register online or via mail in entry by Thursday December 12th at noon Pacific Time. Or on Friday December 14th in person at packet pick up- cash only.
**IMPORTANT NOTE TO MARATHONERS** You MUST be off the parking garage on your second loop (mile 19.1) no later than 1:15pm! AND inside the tunnel at mile 20.3 by 1:30pm. This is at a 7 hour marathon cut off pace. Please also note that per the Park Service, they are now dictating that the course be closed at 3pm firm. Anyone remaining on course after 3pm will be pulled from the course, and race staff reserves the right to pull any runner before that time that is on pace to miss the cut off. As many of you know, I try to be flexible with this at my races- however, I need to follow the new rules of the permitting body, so please respect their enforcement.
MARATHON & 1/2 MARATHON CONVERGENCE:
Due to the double loop marathon course, many of you will want to know where you will converge with the other race distance on your second lap: Marathoner running a 6:15 minute mile pace will reach the Switchbacks at mile 18.8 with the 1/2 marathoners running a 10:13 minute mile pace; Marathon 8 minute mile will converge at M18.8 with 1/2 marathoners running 15:30 pace; Marathoner 9 minute mile will converge at M18.8 with 1/2 marathoners running 18:30 pace. PLEASE EVERYONE: WORK TOGETHER TO ALLOW FASTER RUNNERS TO PASS!!! ANYONE RUNNING GREATER THAN SINGLE FILE ANYWHERE ALONG THE COURSE MUST MOVE OVER/ FALL BEHIND AND MAKE ROOM FOR PASSING/ ON- COMING RUNNERS!! Anyone with additional concerns about this can see me at packet pick up on Friday.
MARATHON & 10K CONVERGENCE:
With the inclusion of the 10K distance debuted in 2011, here is an explanation of the marathon and 10K convergence: The 10K starts first at 8am. The 10K will start at the same location as the marathon, however 10K runners will cross the start line heading DOWNHILL toward the water. They will make a clockwise loop around the median (~0.2 mile) and cross abeam (to the left) the marathon start line. The marathon will then start at 8:02am crossing the start line heading UPHILL, joining in with the 10K runners. The first 0.2 mile of the marathon up to the paved trail turn off will be coned to separate the 10K runners on the left and the marathoners on the right. This should give enough time for runners to seed in and find their pace between the two distances. Once you turn onto the paved trail you should be running alongside those of your pace. The two races together will be approximately the same size as the half marathon field, which starts on its own at 9am. 10K runners: Please note it is imperative that you start with the field at 8am and cross the start line quickly to make way for the marathoners to get in place.
This course is run completely on a paved and packed dirt trail closed to motorized traffic. However, there are a couple of road crossing. These will be manned by volunteers, but please use caution at these intersections. 3 ambulances will be on site for the event: one on the dirt trail after the 5th tunnel (approx mile 4.6, 7.2, 17.7, 20.3 ), one in the Historic Railroad Tunnels Parking Lot, and the other one dispatched out of the start/ finish area at Boulder Beach. Please alert a volunteer or another runner if you need help!
THE SWITCHBACKS and THE DAM:
There are 6 switch backs on this course leading down to the “money shot” of Hoover Dam and the recently completed Bypass Bridge. This is a STRICT NO PASSING/ NO HEADPHONES zone!!!! Single file- one person up/ one person down. Follow the direction of the course marshal. Anyone not following this rule and their direction is subject to DISQUALIFICATION! There is ample signage to warn you and give you advance notice of this zone. Please work together. If you know you will be slow on this section, please have a glance back and allow anyone wishing to pass to do so. This section is 0.095 of a mile in each direction. If you wish to have an extended look at the Dam, please ensure that you are out of the way for those wishing to catch a glimpse on the fly.
Contracted Bus from the Strip:
For those of you that purchased a bus ticket from the Strip: Please check the "Strip Bus List" tab to view the confirmed bus ticket list as of the posted date. Any discrepencies, please email me ASAP: firstname.lastname@example.org. The pick up location is at Bally's Hotel and Casino located at 3645 Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109. Use the FLAMINGO side of the property to board the bus. Look for a LEWIS STAGES bus. This location is within walking distance to many Strip hotels or a few dollars taxi ride. If you are standing on the corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Flamingo, with Bally's Hotel on your right side, turn RIGHT and walk about 200' along Flamingo. There is an incline in the sidewalk to the bus loading area. The one way trip takes about 45 minutes via bus depending on traffic. There are NO TICKETS. Please give the driver your name and get on the bus. He will have a list. Please be sure to note your specific bus departure: leaves at 6:30am OR leaves at 7:30am. Your packets will be at the start line, so no need to come out on Friday. BUS SPECTATORS: your seat has been held on THE SAME bus as your runner! Return departures back to the Strip are ROUGHLY at 11:15am, 12pm, 1:15pm, and 3pm. If you are already registered for the race and only need to buy a Strip Bus Ticket, please email me asap: email@example.com
Please note that the parking garage at Hoover Dam does not open until 8:15am and the cost is $7. We have the upper most level rented out for the race and is closed off to cars for the event. PLEASE do not walk up to watch the 10K finish. You may meet up with you runner down on the ground level. Please also note that parking at the Historic Tunnel Trailhead is very limited, and the park service has requested race spectators NOT park there. If it looks WIDE open, you may use it, but stay no longer than enough time just to see your runner. Please respect this for ease of my permit! Please also note that there are no concessions inside the park and the finish line food is for the registered athletes and volunteers only. Spectators should come self sufficient with their own food and water and dress warm.
Your cars will be parked less than a 1/4 mile from the start/ finish at Boulder Beach, so you may just want to keep any belongings in your car. However we will have a covered BBQ area where you can leave a clothing bag. These are not checked or guarded, so no valuables please. 10K Runners: Your clothing bags will not be transported to your finish line at the Hoover Dam parking garage. I will have Mylar blankets at the 10K finish only to keep you warm until you get back to Boulder Beach.
Mile markers will be every 1 mile. Mile markers will be signs placed inside a traffic cone. For the marathon & ½ marathon signs will be blue. The 10K will be silver.
All of my course marking are signs inside of cones or COLORED TAPE on the pavement. I use NO spray paint. There are some race directors who ignore the permit rules and spray paint along this path and it is not removeable. Do NOT follow any spray paint markings!

Portable toilets will be available at the start/ finish area as well as roughly every 2-3 miles on course.
Marathoners and 1/2 Marathoners: You MUST display or communicate your bib number to the turn around clipboard volunteer to record your arrival.
As with every race, volunteers are a vital part of the event. Finding volunteers is always a challenge. While all of these positions are attended to, I would love to have a few more volunteers to alleviate the burden on these kind souls. If anyone has friends or family coming to watch that are willing to commit to a few hours on an assigned post- please email me. It’d be much appreciated by all! Please be kind and THANK your volunteers!
Marathon and 1/2 Marthon Finish Line:
We are a CHIP TIMED event! Please be sure to cross over the timing mat at the start and finish of the race. Your chip should be attached to your shoe with the fasteners provided. Ask if you need asistance. PLEASE: Display your bib number as you cross the finish line and stay in the chute until the timers have you properly recorded! You MUST return your chip!
10K Finish Line:
Please clearly display your race bib on your front and collect your medal. Your timing chip will be removed and collected. Water and HEED will be available at your finish line, with the remaining of your food and refreshments at Boulder Beach. AWARDS will be handed out back at Boulder Beach- please check with me before leaving the park!!
You will be bused back to Boulder Beach from your finish line with buses departing when full roughly at 9am, 9:15am, 9:30am, 9:50am, 10:05am, and 10:20am FINAL CALL. PLEASE follow the direction of the finish line volunteers and move when indicated away from the finish line and off the upper level parking garage. You will quickly make your way to the lower level to catch the bus where you can meet up with your fellow runners down below; while being sure to not interrupt the flow of the marathon runners.
I am proud to announce Evan Pilchik Photography will be on course photographing the event. It is with great regret that we are no longer allowed to shoot event photos of Hoover Dam or the 10K finish line or switchbacks. The permitting body now requires a separate photographic permit for this spot, with costs that far exceed any potential sales for the photographer. However, photos will be shot along the tunnels trail, and along the River Mountains Loop Trail.
To track the weather use zip code 89005. It will be likely be COLD at the start! Please plan acordingly and note that any clothing items disposed of on course MUST be at the aid stations only, and will not be returned.
Food and drink will be available in the covered BBQ area at Boulder Beach. 10K runners will be bused back here from their finish line for food and awards.
Wet and dry hand towels will also be available at the finish area so you can towel off after the race. Please return all used towels in the clearly marked bin provided.
The Marathon and ½ Marathon races are certified with USATF. This not only means it is accurate, but those running the marathon can use it as a Boston Qualifier. It’s a tough course- so good luck!
I want to take a moment to express my sincere thanks to each and every one of you for attending the Fifth Annual Hoover Dam Marathon, ½ Marathon, and 10K. Many of you are returning runners, and your continued support is SO important and appreciated. To those of you that are new to Calico Racing- welcome to the family! We are a smaller event than many of you may be used to- but that is what can make it so great. A personal race with first rate amenities. With your help, I hope to position this and other Calico Racing events for future growth and a lifelong achievement of passion, environmental responsibility, fun, and of course… running.
See you all soon!
