COURSE
A 2 day running festival offers something for everyone! New, as of 2010 * a 100 miler and 50 miler * We now offer the chance to run back to back events without the headache of travel in between! There are many options: Saturday Marathon + Sunday 50K; 1/2 Marathon BOTH days; Saturday 50 Miler + Sunday 50K; 10K BOTH days; Saturday 10K + Sunday 50K.... you get the idea! OR of course you can just come and run one event. But if you have ever been "ultra curious" this is a great way to expand your boundaries!
All race distances start and finish at Lovell Canyon Road just off Highway 160. Commencing at an elevation of roughly 4500 feet, runners will experience high desert vegetation to include Joshua Trees, Pinion-Juniper, Mountain Rose, Sagebrush, and a relatively lush Toiyabe National Forest not commonly associated with Las Vegas. The road twists and turns thru the canyon; a true treasure of the Spring Mountains N.R.A.
100 Miler: SATURDAY 7am Start time
The 100 miler runs along the paved Lovell Canyon Road as it twists and turns covering rolling terrain. This is an 11 mile stretch. You will run this out and back 4 times for a total of 88 miles, plus a final shorter out and back along the same stretch to complete the 100 mile distance. You will never be further than 5.5 miles to your own drop bag (3 locations available), and every 22 miles you'll be back at "race headquarters". No one climb is too long and for many reasons makes for a great first 100 miler, a possible PR at the distance, while offering a challenge to seasoned runners. While we want everyone to complete the whole 100 mile distance, if you drop out after 3 loops (just under 66 miles) you will be counted as a "Heavy 100K Finisher". Pacers will be allowed for 100 milers only after 44 miles. More specific info about pacers is avaliable under the tab "100 Mile Pacers/ Crew Rules". Total climbing is roughly 8000' with a net zero gain. 32 Hour Cut Off.
50 Miler: SATURDAY 7am Start Time
The 50 miler runs along the paved Lovell Canyon Road as it twists and turns covering rolling terrain. This is an 11 mile stretch. You will run this out and back 2 times for a total of 44 miles, plus a final shorter out and back along the same stretch to complete the 50 mile distance. You will never be further than 5.5 miles to your own drop bag (3 locations available), and every 22 miles you'll be back at "race headquarters". No one climb is too long and for many reasons makes for a great first 50 miler, a possible PR at the distance, while offering a challenge to seasoned runners. No pacers allowed for the 50 miler. Total climbing is roughly 4000' with a net zero gain. 32 hour cut off.
50K: SUNDAY 6am Start time
The 50K runs along the paved Lovell Canyon Road for roughly 11 miles twisting and turning covering rolling and gradually uphill terrain. Just before reaching privately owned Sky Ranch, runners turn left onto the dirt Lovell Summit Road. This section becomes tough as runners climb to the summit at roughly 6805 feet by roughly mile 13. 50K runners continue west of the summit along this same dirt road to their turn around point at mile 15.5. Climbing back up to the summit, runners retrace their steps back along Lovell Summit Road back to the paved Lovell Canyon Road where they return to the finish line. Total paved= 22 miles; Total dirt road= 9 miles. NOTE: IF we have a late snowfall or unusually high precipitation before the race, the dirt road may be too muddy to run, access, and support. IF this is the case, Calico Racing reserves the right to amend the course to ensure everyone's safety. The contingency plan to make up the distance would be to include an out and back section along the paved Lovell Canyon Road. Fingers crossed for Mother Nature to cooperate! 2008 and 2009 ran the full original course on the dirt road. Note that the 50K is the ONLY race of the entire event that runs on any dirt. 9 hour time cut off.
