AID STATIONS:
Aid stations will be roughly every 1.6 to 3.4 miles (see below) You MUST carry at least 20 ounces of water with you at all times during the race! (the only exception is those in the Half Marathon, 10K and 5K) Aid stations will be refill stations and cups will only be offered in limited supply to minimize the earth's impact. This is the desert in the middle of summer in the middle of the day. Never underestimate the dry and hot conditions of the desert! Don't be a hero and put yourself, the other runners, or the race in jeopardy!
That being said, aid stations will be well stocked with water, ice, Hammer HEED energy replacement drink, Hammer Gel, salty snacks, sweet snacks, frest fruit, boiled potatoes and salt, electrolyte tablets, limited first aid provisions, and will include room for an "ice bandana rolling station". There is a mandatory weigh in race morning for the 50 milers and marathoners. 50 mile runners have on course mandatory weigh ins at miles 26.2 and 37.4. Race management reserves the right to "hold up" or terminate any runner's race if excessive weight has been lost (or gained) and will be calculated as a % of weigh. These percentages of weigh loss will be announced in the registered athlete letter (available race week), though if you have specific questions about these numbers before then, please email me. This is for your own safety.
* In between some of the aid stations will be unattended buckets of ice water. This is NOT to drink (gross!). This is to dunk your shirt/ hat/ towel and EXTERNALLY cool yourself. This was new in 2010 and was a huge success.
* 50 Miler & Marathon: Race morning at weigh in, there is a MANDATORY check in of your WATER BOTTLE (20 ounce minimun/ 24+ oz recommended; a 24oz insultated water bottle is included with race entry for the 50 miler & Marathon), ice bandana, and/or cooling technique. Anyone found on course at any time without their water bottle will be disqualified!
*** It is your responsibility to educate yourself about proper fueling and cooling techniques (both internal and external). It is imperative to educate yourself about how much water your body is able to absorb each hour. Take the time to educate yourself and experiment with water processing rates of your body. Utilizing the numerous external cooling techniques available on course will help to minimize the effects of the heat on your body.
**** You must give your bib number to the "clip board" volunteer at the turn around point for your race.
***** Bandits will be shot and left to dehydrate. NO BIB, NO AID!
